How to keep practising Catalan in a bilingual city

Practising Catalan in Barcelona can feel difficult if people around you switch languages easily. The solution is not to try to speak Catalan all day at once, but to create predictable opportunities to hear it, use it and revisit what you have learned. Consistency matters more than an exceptionally long session.

Plan a week with three kinds of practice

  • Listen: spend ten minutes with a short recording or video. First grasp the general idea, then note recurring expressions.
  • Speak: arrange a brief conversation with a person or group and choose a specific topic.
  • Recall: the next day, try to remember five expressions without looking at your notes and make up a sentence for each.

Prepare real-life situations

Choose one interaction per week: ask for a recommendation, explain a plan, ask a question in a shop or talk about your job. Write down only keywords beforehand, not an entire script. If you memorise every sentence, an unexpected reply can throw you off; with keywords, you can improvise.

Agree on corrections that do not interrupt

Tell your conversation partner what help is useful: repeating a sentence, noting two mistakes at the end, or correcting you only when a word prevents understanding. This lets you keep talking while learning from errors. Afterwards, write down the corrected version together with the situation in which it arose.

Measure progress through observable tasks

Instead of asking whether you speak well yet, record what you can do: hold a five-minute conversation, explain a preference or understand the main instructions in an audio clip. Repeat the same task a month later. The comparison reveals tangible progress and shows you what to work on next.

What to do when someone replies in another language

Someone may switch to Spanish out of habit or to make the conversation easier. If you want to keep practising Catalan and the situation allows it, reply naturally in Catalan and continue the exchange; there is no need to debate which language anyone should use. You can also briefly explain: Si et va bé, m’agradaria continuar en català perquè l’estic practicant (If it’s okay with you, I’d like to continue in Catalan because I’m practising it). If the other person prefers a different language, look for another opportunity. The goal is to create respectful, sustainable chances to practise.

If a week gets busy, scale back to one listening session and one conversation rather than stopping altogether. For regular practice and guidance, discover our in-person Catalan classes in Barcelona.
