How many levels are there?
The DELE (Diplomas in Spanish as a Foreign Language) has six levels, aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR):
A1 – Breakthrough (Beginner)
A2 – Waystage (Elementary)
B1 – Threshold (Intermediate)
B2 – Vantage (Upper intermediate)
C1 – Effective Operational Proficiency (Advanced)
C2 – Mastery (Near-native proficiency)
Each level assesses the four essential language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
The key difference between the DELE and the SIELE lies in their validity period, exam format and purpose. Here is a summary of the main differences:
DELE (Diploma in Spanish as a Foreign Language)
- Official certificate issued by the Instituto Cervantes and Spain's Ministry of Education.
- Valid indefinitely (does not expire).
- Divided into six levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2).
- Paper-based format, with scheduled exam sessions throughout the year.
- Assesses the four language skills: reading, listening, writing and speaking.
- More widely recognised for official procedures such as Spanish nationality applications or study at universities in Spain.

SIELE (International Service for the Evaluation of the Spanish Language)
- Digital certification promoted by the Instituto Cervantes and Spanish-speaking universities.
- Valid for 5 years.
- No fixed levels: awards a score from 0 to 1000 in line with the CEFR.
- Remote or in person: choose your date and location.
- Full examination or individual modules.
- Faster certification for professional and academic purposes: results in three weeks.
