For many children and teenagers arriving in Barcelona, school is where they first encounter Catalan. They may hear it in class, see it in learning materials or need it to make friends and join activities. My lessons help them understand their surroundings and develop their language skills without unnecessary pressure.
Content is adapted to the student’s level, from A1 to C2, and to the tasks they face. The priority might be understanding explanations, expanding vocabulary, speaking, reading with confidence or improving writing.
Learning a language at school involves much more than memorising words. Students need to follow instructions, identify important information, ask questions and explain when something isn’t clear. We’ll work on these skills using examples relevant to each student’s situation.
Classes can also support reading comprehension or preparation for activities where Catalan is needed. The goal is to strengthen their language skills, not replace work done in individual subjects.
I use stories, games, pictures, conversations, reading and short projects to give students meaningful reasons to use Catalan. Topics can relate to their interests, encouraging participation and helping them stay engaged.
Understanding Catalan and feeling ready to speak it are different processes. Some students understand a great deal but always reply in another language. In class they can practise answers, ask for time, correct themselves and find ways to continue when they don’t know a word.
Recognising progress is important so that the language doesn’t become just another school difficulty. We want students to see what they can already do and develop strategies to keep learning.
Before starting, we’ll discuss the needs you’ve noticed and the situations where Catalan is used. We’ll review our approach whenever necessary to keep it aligned with the student’s development.
Tell me how much Catalan your child encounters and what difficulties they face. We’ll plan support suited to their level, learning style and school or personal circumstances.
